Oakwood Primary School
Full replacement of the school’s failed emergency lighting system, delivered in phases over school holidays. A compliance-led upgrade completed safely, on time, and with zero disruption to teaching.
The Brief
Oakwood Primary School got in touch after their emergency lighting system had failed throughout the building. They needed a full replacement that would not only meet compliance requirements but also be simple to manage for their site team. We were recommended by another contractor who felt the job was too large for their business. That referral speaks to the kind of projects we ’re increasingly asked to take on – where experience, scale and reliability matter.
The Project
Our brief was to strip out the old emergency lighting and install a new system from the ground up. We fitted a complete range of LED luminaires, including bulkheads, downlighters, exit boxes and twin spots. Emergency test switches were also installed across key locations to make future testing easier and more efficient.
A key challenge was maintaining emergency lighting at all times while we carried out the work. We couldn’t leave the school non-compliant for even a day. To manage this, we phased the project over the Christmas, Easter and Summer holidays when the site was empty, allowing us to work safely and without disrupting the school’s operation.
Coordination was straightforward. We dealt directly with the school’s facilities manager, which meant decisions were quick and communication stayed clear throughout the eight-month programme.
The Outcome
The school was left with a compliant, modern emergency lighting system that’s much easier for them to manage. The old setup had been condemned, so this was an essential upgrade. By planning each phase around the school holidays, we avoided any disruption to staff or students. The work was delivered on time and within the agreed budget for each block. The feedback from the school was very positive, even if working through the council’s intermediary had its challenges.
