Broadway Engineering
We upgraded outdated switchgear and replaced failed high bay lighting at a live engineering factory.
The Brief
We were approached by the facilities manager at Broadway Engineering, an active manufacturing site, after they were recommended to us by another local business. The site had failed an EICR due to a non-compliant installation, and the high bay lighting had also failed, leaving several work areas underlit and below standard.
Their objective was clear, to bring the site back to full compliance, upgrade the lighting to meet industry lux levels, and modernise the distribution equipment in line with the latest BS7671 regulations.
The Project
Our scope included a full upgrade of the factory’s high bay lighting and the removal and replacement of the main distribution boards and switchgear. We specified LED high bay fittings to deliver consistent illumination across all working zones and sourced compliant switchgear designed to modern standards.
One of the biggest challenges was the lack of labelling on the existing distribution board, a common issue with older installations. We had to identify and test each cable individually to determine which machine it supplied. This required a methodical and safe approach to ensure accuracy before switching over.
To avoid disrupting production, we carried out the lighting works during the week while the factory remained operational. Then we returned over a weekend to complete the switchgear replacement, taking advantage of the downtime to carry out the work safely and efficiently.
The Outcome
The factory now has bright, energy-efficient lighting across all bays and a fully compliant electrical setup that meets current safety standards. By phasing the works and scheduling out-of-hours where needed, we ensured minimal disruption to their operations, something the client really appreciated.
The project was completed within two weeks, on time and within budget. The facilities manager was extremely happy with the outcome, particularly our flexibility around their production schedule.
